St Edmundsbury Cathedral Seeks Senior Non-Executive Chapter Member to Help Shape the Future of Heritage and Community
St Edmundsbury Cathedral is seeking an experienced and visionary Senior Non-Executive Chapter Member to join its Board of Trustees at a pivotal moment in the organisation’s development.
The role offers a unique opportunity to contribute strategic oversight and governance expertise to the Cathedral which serves as a hub for worship, learning, and community engagement across the county. It is one of Suffolk’s most significant heritage and cultural institutions, which welcomes over 70,000 visitors annually.

The Senior Non-Executive Chapter Member will be appointed by the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich and will provide strategic guidance on all aspects of the Cathedral’s work. This is a governance role – not an executive position – and offers the chance to shape the Cathedral’s long-term direction and mission without day-to-day operational responsibilities. It will involve offering strategic advice on the Cathedral’s charitable mission, financial stewardship, and strategic planning; bringing expertise and experience to support evidence-based decision-making; and promoting the Cathedral’s vision and work across Bury St Edmunds and the wider county of Suffolk.
Previously, the role of The Senior Non-Executive Chapter Member was held by Mark Pendlington. Mark will step down from his role as he has been appointed by HM King Charles III to the role of Lord-Lieutenant of Suffolk following the retirement of Clare, Countess of Euston CVO. The Very Reverend Joe Hawes, Dean of St Edmundsbury said,
The role asks for commitment to six Chapter meetings per year (typically lasting around two hours) As well as attendance at some sub-committee meetings as appropriate. Trustees are welcomed as leading members of the Cathedral community and are encouraged to participate in worship and Cathedral events. This is a voluntary, unremunerated position. The term of office is three years, with the possibility of a further three-year term (maximum six years).
