Director of Music Takes Up New Role at Wells

After three years as Director of Music, Timothy Parsons will be leaving St Edmundsbury Cathedral on 1 September to take up the role of Director of Music at Wells Cathedral.

While at the Cathedral, Tim has been instrumental in developing the choirs which has included recruiting choristers from a wide variety of local schools in the Bury St Edmunds area and beyond. He also recruited professional Vicars Choral to the choir to sing alongside the Lay Clerks. He has oversight over all the Cathedral choirs, including the St Edmundsbury Singers and Cathedral Youth Choir.

In 2023, Tim created the Singing Schools project to support and encourage singing in primary-age schools in the area. Through vocal workshops run in partner schools, and exciting performance opportunities which bring together children from across the whole programme, the aim of Singing Schools is to give as many children as possible in the area the chance to discover and develop a joy for singing. Many of the Cathedral Choristers joined the choir having participated in the Singing Schools programme.

Tim was previously Assistant Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral and prior to this role held organ scholarships at the cathedrals of Hereford and Winchester. He was a chorister at Guildford Cathedral, and was later organ scholar at Selwyn College, Cambridge. Whilst at Cambridge he was also organ scholar for King’s Voices, the mixed-voice choir of King’s College Chapel.

Tim said, “I’ve spent a wonderful three years at St Edmundsbury Cathedral during an exciting chapter in its musical history. It has been an honour to develop the Cathedral’s music programme and know that my successor will be taking on a department in excellent health and heart. I’m especially grateful to my colleagues and singers, members of the Cathedral community, and many people across the Diocese for their kindness and welcome during my time here. It will be sad for my wife Cressida and I to say goodbye to such a wonderful community of people, but we’re excited for the next chapter at Wells.”

We will also be saying goodbye to Cressida Parsons, our Philanthropy & Membership Manager. Cressida joined us in November 2021 and has been the driving force behind the New Chair Appeal, the Grand Nave Dinner and our patron scheme.

Cressida says, “Being welcomed into the St Edmundsbury family has been wonderful and there have been so many highlights during my time here. I’m excited to continue to build out the fundraising work we’re doing in the coming months and create a programme of events for 2025 that I can view from afar! It will be tough to leave behind wonderful friends and such a kind  and generous community, but Tim and I are very excited for our new chapter.”

The Very Reverend Joe Hawes, Dean of St Edmundsbury said: “We’re obviously very sad to say goodbye to both Tim and Cressida later this year. They’ve been such valuable members of the Cathedral staff team and both have bought great knowledge and injected a real enthusiasm into their roles. However, it will be lovely for them to be closer to their families and take on a new challenge at Wells. We’re thrilled that we still have seven months with them both to build on their successes here before they move on.”

Tim and Cressida will remain in post at St Edmundsbury Cathedral until Tim begins his new role at Wells.
