Cathedral Opens After Dark for Special Evening of Activities
St Edmundsbury Cathedral will see the return of Cathedrals at Night, a special event which invites the public into the heart of the Cathedral after dark.
This year, the event celebrates 20 years of the Millennium Tower, the Cathedral’s now iconic tower which was completed in 2005 following an ambitious building project that began in 1999. A highlight from this year’s event is the chance to climb the tower – something that has not previously been offered to the public after sunset.

These 30-minute, guided night-time climbs up the Cathedral’s tower are available throughout the evening, with spaces limited to 10 per session. As darkness falls, participants will experience unique views and the quiet majesty of Bury St Edmunds by evening lights.
As well as the tower climbs, visitors will be able to take part in torchlight tours through the Cathedral, learn more about our Ancient Library from our librarians who will give up-close torchlight tours of some of our ancient books. There will be family craft activities, giant jenga, an exhibition on the tower build and the chance to build your own tower from LEGO! All this as well as mulled wine and hot chocolate.
James Stark, Head Verger and Events Manager at the Cathedral said of the event, “Cathedrals at Night is one of our favourite events of the year. It’s such a great opportunity to see the Cathedral in a new way and we have something for everyone this year with our mix of activities. We welcome everyone to come and explore their Cathedral at night.”
Cathedrals at Night is free to attend but booking is advised. You can get tickets here.
Tower climbs are £3.00 each and need to be booked in advance here.
