Abbey Ruin Repairs

Essential conservation works are required to safeguard the Abbey ruins, which continue to suffer from prolonged exposure to the elements and the impact of increasingly severe weather.

The historic fabric has deteriorated in recent years, leading to a greater reliance on reactive repairs. By addressing these issues now and restoring the site to a more sustainable condition, we can secure its long-term survival for future generations while ensuring minimal disruption for present-day visitors.

English Heritage has a statutory responsibility to preserve and provide access to the Abbey ruins, part of the National Heritage Collection – a portfolio of over 400 historic sites owned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and managed under the Historic Properties License.

This project will enable English Heritage not only to fulfil this responsibility but also to strengthen its role within the local community. Through collaboration with project partners, engagement with a broader range of local stakeholders, and the establishment of a dedicated volunteer team, English Heritage will be better placed to support the ongoing management of the site.

The works will deliver more than conservation alone: they will help foster long-term partnerships, broaden community involvement, and contribute to the economic and social wellbeing of Bury St Edmunds.
