Worship Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to book to attend services?

No. There is no need to book – just turn up!

Do I have to pay to attend services?

No. Worship is always free. At some services we may take a collection and there are also contactless machines around the Cathedral so that, if you want to make a donation, you can – but there is no obligation to do so. If you worship with us regularly and consider yourself to be part of the Cathedral community we would encourage you to consider supporting us through the planned giving scheme.

Does it matter if I’ve never been to church before and don’t know what to do?

It doesn’t matter at all. Everyone is welcome at our services. There will be people to help and show you what to do, if that’s what you want, but it’s also fine to be at a service and just absorb what’s going on without worrying too much about joining in.

Can I attend worship if I’m not a Christian?

Yes. Our worship is open to all.

Can I receive Holy Communion (the bread and wine) at Cathedral services?

If you are a baptised Christian you are welcome to receive Communion (the bread and wine) at any of our Eucharist services. If you’re not baptised, you are still very welcome to attend and to come forward to receiving a blessing instead of the bread and wine.

Do you live-stream any of your services?

Yes! Our services of Choral Evensong and/or Evening Prayer are live-streamed each day (Monday – Friday at 5.30 pm; Saturday and Sunday at 3.30 pm) as well as the Choral Eucharist at 10.30 am on Sundays. The service will go live on our YouTube Channel at the appropriate times. You can download the orders of service here and you can find our YouTube Channel here.

Can I take photographs or videos during Cathedral services?

Members of the public are NOT permitted to take photographs or to record services in any way. This is to ensure we comply with Safeguarding and Data Protection legislation.

If I attend a Cathedral service, will my image be used?

If you attend a service in person, you may appear in Cathedral photographs, video or livestream; this may be used in the public domain, including social media. If you or your family do not wish to be viewed on the livestream video feed for a service at which you are present, please let a warden know before the service.

Can I bring my children to the Sunday service?

Yes! The 9.00 am All-Ages Eucharist on a Sunday is particularly suitable for children but they are also very welcome at the 10.30 am service children are also welcome. Our Junior Church takes place alongside that service, and we also have a children’s area in the Cathedral which you are welcome to make use of.

Are all areas of the Cathedral wheelchair accessible?

Yes. There is a temporary ramp in position to access the Quire; all other areas used for worship are on the same level. You can find out more about our accessibility here.
