Helping others

The current crisis has shown us that community spirit is alive and well with many examples of kindness and neighbourliness. Many people find themselves confined to home. But others, following the Government’s guidelines, are able to help in the community.

Here are some tips on staying safe as a volunteer.

If you feel you could volunteer in some way, do look at ‘Home But Not Alone’, which is a Suffolk-focused service that connects people who want to volunteer in their communities with people who need help during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is run through a system called Tribe-Volunteer, which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. If you need help from a volunteer please phone freephone 0800 876 6926 (9.00 am to 5.00 pm, seven days a week).

We have all been inspired by Captain Tom Moore and his amazing fundraising effort for the NHS. The NHS staff are doing such a wonderful job at present. You may wish to support our local NHS Trust at the West Suffolk Hospital. Find out more here
If you wish to help in a practical way (making scrubs), this is their current appeal.

The local foodbank, Gatehouse, also needs financial support. Donations can be made via their LocalGiving page.

Supporting the Storehouse Foodbank

The Cathedral supports this food bank via our Mothers’ Union. If you are already collecting food for Storehouse then thank you.

Donations can be safely dropped off at the West Suffolk Vineyard church office or contact the office on 01284 765874 or

At the moment it is not possible to volunteer at the Cathedral, as it is closed. But volunteers contribute a huge amount to the work of Edmundsbury Cathedral and play lay a vital role in supporting our work. We have over 300 volunteers who help by tending the gardens, welcoming visitors and other behind the scenes activities.

We look forward to welcoming them back as soon as it is possible to do so.

If you would like to be part of this thriving and energetic group, do let us know.
